Ellen’s voice was smooth, but Annabelle couldn’t read the underlying emotion. With Dennis as a brother, how can she be so normal? All of Dennis’s siblings are successful. What happened to Dennis?

While Ellen spoke, Annabelle remembered holidays with her in-laws: Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, occasional weddings, little more.

“So all in all,” said Ellen, “I just wanted to tell you that Derek feels bad about what he said to you. He was just trying to help Mom. I just wanted to call and let you know that Dennis has gone back to his apartment and he’s not acting out any more. I guess you told him that our mom has cancer?”

“I told him what Derek told me,” said Annabelle.

“I guess one of us should have told him about it earlier but Mom made us swear we wouldn’t. We only found out a month ago ourselves,” she paused, her voice breaking. “But anyway, Dennis has made a miraculous recovery and things are looking up. So I just wanted to tell you.”

“I’m glad you called,” said Annabelle, softly.

“I think Dennis is relieved now that he’s signed the papers and this thing is in motion,” continued Ellen, sighing. “Everyone knew you two would get divorced someday. We all knew you guys weren’t happy together. I hope things work out for you.”

“Thank you,” said Annabelle. “I’m really sorry that everyone got so upset about all this. I hope your mom gets better; she’s a sweet person. I was very sorry to hear she’s so sick… I was thinking about sending her a card. Do you think that would be OK?”

Ellen paused. “No,” she finally said. “That might not be a good idea right now.”

Annabelle swallowed hard and the conversation ended politely. Dennis has always been the problem child; the one his mother worries about.

1. Did I somehow cause his mother’s cancer?

2. Other people get divorced without harming their in-laws. How could I have so much power?

3. I am not responsible for her cancer.

4. I am only responsible for myself and for Sarah. And for this baby inside me.

5. No more soft drinks or beer or wine.

6. I just need to relax and accept this life. If I am pregnant, I need to relax. If I’m not pregnant, I still need to relax.
